Prayer is no different than talking to another person. We should, of course, show reverence and praise to our heavenly Father during the prayer time which is different from talking to a person. Some people may not be comfortable praying because they don't know what to say. All we need to do is speak from the heart and even when we don't know what to say, just ask God to search your heart and listen to your spirit as the Holy Spirit inside of us will speak on our behalf.
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
Prayer starts from an intimate relationship with Christ. The deeper our relationship with Christ the more comfortable we are in prayer. Be sure you are developing a relationship with Christ daily and not putting Him on a shelf until a need comes along. He longs to commune with us. We can never communicate with Him too much. Remember communication is two-way. You talk and listen.
Below is an excerpt from a devotional by Jordan Loftis to help understand the purpose of prayer.
In prayer, we should understand that:
God is a perfect Father who wants to hear from us.
God is a “Holy Father” who is powerful enough to intervene in our lives.
God is a willing Father who wants to both deliver and work through us.
God is our provider and everything we have is from him.
God transforms us through prayer, renewing our mind and directing our steps
Spend time in conversation with God today: both talking and listening.
Below is a prayer wheel where each segment represents five minutes. Total duration is 60 minutes.
