Furnace of Favor
✨ Devotional: The Day I Tried to Outshine God’s Glory (and Lost)
Some days you walk into church feeling like a whole anointed masterpiece… and then Sister So‑and‑So strolls in with her perfect hair, perfect Bible tabs, and a glow so bright you’re convinced she charges in the sun like a solar lantern.
You try to act holy, but inside you’re thinking: “Lord, why does she look like the Proverbs 31 woman and I look like the Psalm 51 woman.”
But here’s the truth: God never asked you to compete with anyone else’s shine. He just asked you to burn with the flame He gave you.
Sometimes that flame is a steady candle. Sometimes it’s a bonfire. And sometimes it’s a spark that pops unexpectedly like a firecracker and hits someone in the forehead.
But it’s yours — and it’s sacred.
📖 Scripture
Zechariah 2:5 (NIV)
“And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,” declares the Lord, “and I will be its glory within.”
God said, “I’ll be your protection AND your glow. You don’t have to manufacture either.”
🔥 Short Story: The Ember That Wouldn’t Behave
There once was a tiny ember named Emberly. She lived in a grand fireplace full of big, impressive flames — tall flames, loud flames, flames that crackled like they had something to prove.
Emberly? She was… well… a spark. A cute spark. A small spark. A spark that occasionally popped out of the fire and landed on the rug, causing the angels to gasp and the saints to stomp.
One day Emberly sighed, “Lord, why can’t I be a big flame like them?”
And God said, “Because I didn’t make you to be big. I made you to be bright.”
Then He pointed to a cold, lonely corner of the room where a little candle sat unlit.
“Go hop over there,” He said.
So Emberly did. And the moment she touched the wick — WHOOSH — the whole room lit up.
The big flames cheered. The angels clapped. The saints stopped stomping.
And Emberly realized: A spark can start a revival.
🙏 Prayer
Lord, thank You for giving me a flame that fits me. When I’m tempted to compare, remind me that You are my fire, my glow, and my glory. Help me shine with joy, humor, and holy confidence — not competition. Fan my spark into exactly what You designed it to be. Amen.
